SquidgeWorld Archive have had a large number of people trying to sign up for the WRONG REASON. They either post solely NON-fandom related stuff or want to take advantage of fanworks and/or their creators - like the ones soliciting to do art for stories for payment - so the site has now restricted sign ups to invitation only.

I have a number of invites for SquidgeWorld Archive if anyone here with a Dreamwidth account would like one. Note: The reason for DW account is so I can quickly check you are a real fan!

MOVIES:

The Quiet Place: Day One:

I really enjoyed this movie. I thought it well paced with well written characters. Samira (Sam) is a terminally ill patient who happens to be in New York with her service cat, Frodo, to watch a play (marionette show). It's an outing run by her hospice situated just outside of NYC. When we first meet her she is pessimistic. Basically waiting to die. When everything happens she ends up helping and being helped by an English guy, Eric, who is in NYC to study law. They survive several scary encounters but the most memorable moment for me was him telling her he was so scared and afraid of dying. I loved how she comforted him without it being romantic. Just pure compassion from someone already looking death in the face. She hands him Frodo to hug, knowing he needed Frodo more than her at that moment. Highlight for END MOVIE spoilers! The ending is so good. Eric knows from Sam that she is dying and has only days left. At the end they are by the shore and there is a boat passing that is laden with survivors (creatures cannot swim) but no way to reach it as the creatures are paralleling it along the shoreline. Sam hands Frodo over to Eric and tells him to run. She then starts smashing cars to set off alarms, drawing the creatures away from him so he can make a run for it along a pier. They hear him though but he has a good head start and he just manages to jump off the end into the water before the creatures can reach him. Hearing the noise the boat has stopped and he swims to safety and climbs onboard with Frodo. The final scene is Sam unafraid and going out on her own terms by playing loud music. It's rare for a movie to bring me to tears but there were a few scenes that tugged at me.

TV SHOWS:

Death in Paradise:

Another interesting and intriguing case where Mervin and the team have to figure out who killed an 'Agony Aunt' columnist. I love how the case slowly revealed the truth about the victim and a crime from decades earlier.

Prisoner of Beauty:

Finally finished this and enjoyed it for the most part. My attention span has not been that great recently otherwise I would have finished watching it sooner! I do love how they tackled every new obstacle with common sense and some logic rather than simply jumping to conclusions and letting misunderstandings fester. It was refreshing in that respect. However, I could see the dark clouds in the distance moving ever closer and I hoped and was pleased that the drama remained true to resolving things without too much melodrama. I felt sad when the cousin (Qiao Fan) sacrificed herself so she could no longer be held as a hostage against her own husband ... and General Wei Liang's death was inevitable the moment they had him waving goodbye, making it so obvious it would be the last time they saw him alive. General Wei Qu fighting to bring back his body and save the true Qiao ruler was emotional and the battle scenes were good too. Glad both Lord Wei (Zhong lin) and Bi Zhi put an end to the evil ruler Liu Yan, who had murdered his father, stepmother and anyone with a claim to the throne. Also was pleased to see Shi Yuan (Zhong Lin's cousin) ride up to command the military. They could have prevented a lot of problems if Wei Shao (Zhong Lin) had executed the conniving and nasty Lady Yu Lou when he had the chance but he was honoring his dead brother by not killing her for her crimes.

Return to Paradise:

We finished watching the second season which was a murder at Glenn and Daisy's wedding. Poor Mac was determined to solve it quickly so the interrupted wedding could go on, feeling like she owed it to Glenn - her ex who she left standing at the altar. At the end she does figure it all out, solving two murders a decade apart, but Daisy calls off the wedding permanently as she has seen how Glenn was still more focused on Mac than on his own wedding. It's obvious Mac still loves him but Glenn gets in his truck and drives away, saying he isn't coming back. Guess we need to wait until next season to see what happens.

The Judge Returns:

I discovered quite by accident that there was another 'Judge' drama set in a dystopian Korea like The Devil Judge, with the same actor playing the judge. Even though it is not the same characters I decided to start watching and ended up binging all 14 episodes! Lee Han-young was a corrupt judge who ended up being framed and murdered, regretting all his mistakes as he dies. When he reaches the afterlife he is tried and pleads guilty to his crimes. He is given a chance to redeem himself, waking up to realize it is 10 years earlier, just before he started down the wrong path. This time he decides to fix all the things he did wrong and bring down the corrupt cabal running the country - much like in The Devil Judge - and this means taking risks. He reunites with his oldest (best) friend, and finds other allies - a reporter, and two prosecutors - and between them they eventually succeed... for now. Just like in The Devil Judge, the vacuum left by those they took down is quickly filled with new corrupt officials and moguls greedy for personal wealth and power at any cost.

The Pitt:

Hour 11: I am still enjoying this. Arrogant student doctor Ogilvie had a rude awakening when he failed to mention an issue to the attending and it may now cost the patient his life. I think it was the kick he needed. Very topical with all the drama surrounding the ICE agents and how that added more mayhem with patients and staff disappearing in case they get targeted... and then they drag off a male nurse for obstruction who was only doing his job helping the poor woman the Ice Agents had brought in after their heavy handed arrest had injured her. Hour 12: Glad Dana stopped that girl from choking one of her nurses but I can see Robby's point that she needs to deal with her PTSD from when she was attacked 10 months earlier. Looks like Santos has her own issues - cutting. I think Joy has the right mindset by putting boundaries on her work, especially when no longer being paid for the stress and aggravation. I'm sure she would be there if a disaster struck the city but this was just a 'normal' shift with as few extra issues. Plus, having been one of those people who would burn themselves out, I recognize now that all I did was give the management no reason to hire more staff!

BOOKS/FAN STUFF **** POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT ****

FANFICTION: I read a number of stories during the week from various fandoms to complete my comment_bingo card. In particular I really enjoyed:

Whatever it Takes by ChaiChaiChai - a canon-divergence crossover between Word of Honor and The Untamed
Summary: Wen Kexing would not let Zhou Zishu die. He refused. He would go to every healer in the land, if necessary. He would leave the martial world entirely with his zhiji, abandoning his revenge, if it meant saving his soulmate. And when memories of his childhood resurfaced, memories of distant relatives skilled in the healing arts, he felt hopeful at last. Meanwhile, in the Burial Mounds, a letter arrived. Wen Qing and Wen Ning wondered who, exactly, this 'Wen Kexing' was, and how he was related to them. Wei Wuxian was simply fascinated by the mechanical bird that delivered the letter.

MOVIES:

Abigail:

A Netflix vampire movie that was quite well done and kept me entertained. I'd already been spoiled for the main plot twist but that didn't ruin the movie. If anything, knowing that twist made it more intriguing. Lots of blood and gore. It had some of the usual tropes - people walking into creepy areas all alone when they know they are being hunted, as well as some vampire tropes... but subverted a few others like holy crosses and garlic. I really liked the ending though with the 'pinky promise' kept.

War Machine:

Another Netflix movie about a guy determined to 'cross the finish line' and become a Ranger to honor his brother whom he felt he had failed when he did not manage to carry him to safety. The final selection exercise was a mission to destroy a downed aircraft and rescue its pilot with 24 hours. Unfortunately that was the exact same time an alien attack started and the squad were thrown into a life and death situation against a war machine from another planet in relentless pursuit. With all but one other wounded man still alive, he figures out how to take it down using his knowledge of mechanics and carries his wounded team mate to (relative) safety. Relative...as the rest of the alien fleet is on its way. Overall it was a well paced movie with both a human element and of course a relentless machine hunting them down after seeing them as a real threat.

TV SHOWS: I didn't realise there was now a second season for a couple of shows I'd previously started watching. I played catch-up on them.

Death in Paradise:

Mervin managed to get himself into trouble when he went to confront his half-brother over the sale of their mother's home but fortunately his Team on Saint Marie had his back and he solved the case... though Solomon will likely do some time in prison for his role in the case.

Into the Night:

I watched all 6 episodes of season 2 back-to-back. Overall it was good but I really have to admit some people are almost too stupid to live. Why, oh why did they tie the mentally unstable woman in/near the plane's cockpit of all places! Surely they could have tied her somewhere she could not become a threat. Instead she gets free and destroys their chance of getting back to the others by damaging the plane's controls. Also, all these shows make me lose hope in humanity. Why do the nasty people always survive? Are they like human cockroaches? The more I see of these post-apocalyptic shows, the more I realise I would NOT want to survive. Better to step out and enjoy the sun and not have to live in constant fear from other people.

Kingdom:

Another good series where I didn't realise there was a 2nd season. I decided to re-watch the first season as I recalled it being good. It's about political troubles in Joseon BUT the situation is worsened by people becoming infected with a worm parasite that causes them to turn into ravenous zombies. The chief bad guy got his comeuppance at the hand of his own nasty daughter - the Queen - who had committed some horrific acts in her power grab. Unfortunately it ended on another cliff hanger with no idea if a season 3 will ever be made. There were hints that it would but I won't hold my breath!

The Great Pottery Throw-Down:

Fynn was a worthy winner overall though all three finalists did a superb job on their pottery theaters. My only personal dislike of Fynn's piece was the lack of color. He chose a monotone palette for the most part but there were places where a pop of color would have elevated his piece.

Prisoner of Beauty:

This Cdrama was recommended in several different places and as I like the main male lead actor (Liu Yuning) I decided to give it a go. I'm now on episode 6 and enjoying it so far. It has all the usual cdrama elements. This time it is a woman sent as a bride in a marriage alliance between two formerly close clans and the obstacles she and her new husband must overcome especially as her clan betrayed her husband's 14 years earlier by failing to come to their aid when they were attacked. He saw his brother, father and grandfather slaughtered and has endured 14 years of trying to take back their 'kingdom'. What I like SO FAR is that she is thinking of ways to deal with any misunderstandings between them and their people in a logical way rather than add to the problems. Her obvious concern is more for the people than for herself and that is slowly winning him over.

Return to Paradise:

Watched a few more episodes - end of season 1 and start of season 2 - where Mackenzie decides to stay on a while longer and deal with another murder. They put a vital clue in plain sight this time so I guessed the killers of the cruel father very early on though it was fun learning exactly how they did it. Similarly with the next murder, I thought it strange they took it for granted that it was the murder victim walking alone the jetty to the boat when you never see more than a fuzzy image from behind. Otherwise it was interesting to see how the murder was accomplished and why that person was murdered. The one with the music band was quite sad really. The victim was mentally abusive, a narcissist, and a thief. All round nasty piece of work so it was sad that his victims will end up paying a high price for killing him.

The Pitt:

Hour 9: Love Robbie's talk with Wittaker about the widow and her baby. Also loved the scene between Robbie and Jack (Abbott). Of course, just when everything seems bad it now has to get worse with more injuries on the way. Hour 10: More new cases have arrived due to a waterpark accident. I loved the banter between Robbie and the motorbike mechanic he had befriended and who he had insisted on coming into the ER. The torn off leg case was interesting though it might have been better to have sedated the poor girl as seeing her leg like that made her hysterical. Felt sorry for Dr. Mohan having a panic/anxiety attack due to her mother and residency circumstances on top of all the stress of the shift.

MOVIES:

The Soul Hunter:

This was a movie on Amazon that sounded interesting as it was about cultivators (called soul hunters) in a more modern era than the usual wuxia/xianxia... around late 1800 early 1900. It was a weird film noir vibe and the 'magic' instances were intriguing, as was the plot line... and then it suddenly ended in the middle of the story as if it was PART ONE but I have seen no sign of a part 2 anywhere. Such a shame as it was really intriguing up until the sudden ending.

TV SHOWS:

9-1-1:

The new episode is out but for some reason no one has uploaded it to Filefactory! I've managed to find a Dl and will watch it later today.

Death in Paradise:

Another interesting case of poisoning. I always look at the women in those cases as poison does seem to a woman's weapon of choice! More Melvin is having more problems with his half-brother and the teaser for the next episode has something happening there.

The Great Pottery Throw-Down:

We watched the semi-final where they made wall-mounted fountains. All of them were good but I do agree with the choice for who would be leaving. Bill had made a mistake with the oxides on Neptune and the end result was a little ugly whereas the others had managed to lift their pieces, otherwise it was lovely sculpturing especially on the Kelpies.

Return to Paradise:

This is the Australian spin-off from Death in Paradise about a quirky but highly inteligent women runs away on her marriage day and becomes Detective Inspector in the Mtroploitan Polce (London) but after being framed for stealing evidence she returns home to Dolphin Cove, Australia, and ends up as a detective helping to solve murders. Overall it's not a bad show with some interesting murders following the same format as the original show. The deteective (Mackenzie) is interesting but she has a high IQ, low EQ and always looks a little manic.

South Sea Tomb:

Another series following the adventures of Shirley Yang and Hu Bayi in search of ancient treasures. Lots of Chinese fantasy elements and amazing sets. Lots of action too but with rounded characters (from the previous several series played by same actors) These series are really worth watching if you like things like Tomb Raider, National Treasure, Indiana Jones etc.

The Pitt:

Hour 8: Another interesting set of cases. Poor Whitaker quickly taking a photo of the board only to find it wasn't in focus... but he barely had time to lift his phone and no one else managed at all. At least Joy (?) has a photographic memory so could recall all of it. Love all the Dana quips. She has such a dry sense of humor. I saw The Pitt did well in the recent awards with quite a few going their way.

I am getting better - slowly! I can actually sit in front of my PC for a short time before the discomfort is too much. Vegetating on the couch with the TV on is still the best source of distraction.

9-1-1: No new episode until Feb 26

Death in Paradise:

We caught up on three episodes of the new season. All have been very good with interesting cases. I quite like Mervin and felt sorry for him reuniting with his half-brother only to be taken advantage of so badly.

The Great Pottery Throw-Down: I am an episode behind.

The Pitt:

Hour 7: My usual DL site has not got an upload so I spent 3 hours DLing from somewhere I don't have a paid account! Overall it was another good episode and I loved seeing Jack Abbot as the SWAT medic. It was interesting seeing how they were handling the rape survivor. Also learning things were going to get much worse now the department was going to have to work 'analog' due to the cyber attacks on other nearby hospitals. It seems the replacement head of the ER (Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi) may hev some trauma issues she is dealing with, possibly from her volunteer work overseas.

Another week where I got very little accomplished other than vegetating in front of the TV :(

Also there was some really sad news concerning a fandom acquaintance I have known for over a decade. Spikeluv, known for her wonderful smallfandomfest and smallfandombang and for being such a generous and enthusiastic person, passed away on Feb 2. She will be sorely missed by me and by many others here in fandom. Her last post is HERE and has a little information courtesy of someone who knew her far better than me.

MOVIES:

The Red Envelope:

A Thai comedy-drama created as an adaption to the Chinese movie 'Marry my Dead Body'. A guy picks up a red envelope that is used as a way to trap someone into marrying their deceased son/grandson. It was full of amusing comedic moments where this inept Police informant decides to try to solve the mystery surrounding his ghost husband's death.

TV SHOWS: I decided to focus on TV shows I had started but stopped watching for whatever reason.

9-1-1: No episode until Feb 26

Death in Paradise:

I watched the 2025 Christmas Special and enjoyed it a lot. I quite like this new inspector but I had figured out the basics of how the bullet ended up in the victim quite quickly. As to the murderer.... well, I was hoping I was wrong but suspected her from the moment she came to the train station. The new season has started airing but I'll probably wait until it is all out before watching.

Fallout:

I ended up watching ALL of the episodes right through season 2 (8 episodes a season) and I really enjoyed it. I know absolutely nothing about the game so all I can say it that is was easy to follow, visually good, and I liked all the characters and their various plot lines. In particular I found the time jumps to what happened before the bombs dropped interesting, and I am hoping there will be a season 3 to explain how Cooper Howard became a ghoul and what happened to his daughter and wife. Especially his daughter as she was with HIM when the bombs dropped!

Love in the Clouds:

I finished watching this and enjoyed the story for the most part though it did use a few too many worn-out plot devices and misunderstandings. I did feel sad for Immortal Situ|Chao Yuan who started out too nice for the world but ended up the villain because of his obsession with Ming Xian/Ming Yi - it's a bit of a tired old cliche to make the 3rd in the love triangle a bad guy. I loved many of the secondary characters including the Princess (Empress) who starts out as if she is the 3rd part of the love triangle but has her own love interest that works out well. The 'swapped at birth' plot was well done though Lots of great fantasy fight scenes and high fantasy generally with beautiful sets and costumes. On a side note: The boy who played Chen Xi was so familiar, especially when he smiled, and it turns out he played Zhen Yan - the child version of Wen Kexing in Word of Honor.

Shetland:

I caught up on season 10. Another interesting case concerning the discovery of an old woman murdered under strange circumstances and its connection to the drugs problem on the island. I felt sad for the husband from the young couple and their daughter caught up in it all. He had no idea what was happening and by deciding to help her he made himself complicit. Also, if she had money problems then why didn't she simply sell one of her two restaurants to cover the debt rather than take a loan from a shady source. Also so naive to think that ONE drug drop was going to be it. Once they have their hooks into a person there is no getting OUT.

The Great Pottery Throw-Down: I hope to catch up on Episode 6 later this week.

The Pitt:

Hour 6: Sad for Louis but I liked how Robby let everyone know about Louis and the reason why he was an alcoholic. In some ways I hope it will let them see other patients with addictions in a more sympathetic light.

Revenged Love:

Finally finished this. The whole story line was about a man (Wu Qiqiong|Wu Suowei) who lost his girlfriend of 3 years because she did not think him good enough. Although believing himself to be straight, he decides to take revenge by stealing her rich boyfriend (Chi Cheng). However, the rich boyfriend never really wanted her as he is gay but was being rail-roaded by his parents. Chi Cheng falls for Wu Suowei and we have all the problems of Wu Suowei slowly realizing he is falling for Chi Cheng too. Overall it was very good and I loved the secondary pairing as much as the primary. I enjoyed the story and it ended in a good place with all the secrets out in the open and both pairings working it out. The final episode had quite a few sweet moments.

Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (aka Goblin)

I really liked the whole reincarnation concept as well as the existence of 'Gods' walking the earth. The whole back story with General Kim Shin (the Goblin), his sister Kim Sun and King Wang Yao (who was her husband) was so good and how, 900 years later, the three were able to reconcile the tragedy of that past. The catalyst was the Goblin's Bride, a girl who should never have been born but was saved by the Goblin after her heavily pregnant mother begged any god to save her after she was hit by a car. It was interesting seeing all the characters and what had become of them and how they interacted. I loved the Grim Reapers who have no memory of who they were, only that they had committed a great sin that prevented them from being reincarnated until they had served their punishment as Reapers. The revelation of the main Grim Reaper was particularly good. I loved that the reincarnation gave them all a chance to attain the happiness lost to them in previous incarnations, especially Wang Yao and Kim Sun. I thought there was 19 episodes but there is 16 plus 3 behind the scenes episodes at the end.

Love in the Clouds:

A fantasy Cdrama starring Hou Minghao and Lu Yuxiao (who is stunningly beautiful!). Plot: At the annual Qingyun Conference in the Hexu Six Realms, Ji Bozai, a warrior from the Jixing Abyss, defeats Ming Xian, the cold warrior who has reigned supreme for seven consecutive years; Ji Bozai becomes the hottest new star in Jixing Abyss. However, Ming Xian's defeat was because he was poisoned. He needs a particular cure that everyone believes Ji Bozai possesses. Also, Ming Xian has been disguising as a MAN. As the Fairy Ming Yi, she approaches Ji Bozai and together they are caught up in a conspiracy that will affect the Six Realms. The acting is great, the costumes and drama excellent, and the fight sequences/fantasy elements are superb. I started this but only watched the first episode. Now I'm around halfway through.

The Great Pottery Throw-Down:

We caught up on three episodes and all were very good. Felt sorry for Mark as the handle of his puzzle jug broke off. Others had cracks and were even leaking. I could understand why they chose Whitney to leave in Raku week. I loved his shark but it was too small and not really the right choice for the given task. Sad though as he is very talented. Overall I liked Andrew's homage to Swanage but he did not accomplish as much as the others in the time available.

That Abigail is up to no good. Even before she picked up Christopher I was getting bad vibes from her and now I am not sure what she plans to do next. She has obviously fixated on Eddie but has that turned sour after he sent her away rather than offer her a place to stay the night? As for Chim and Harry, I am so glad that is resolved and loved how it ended up being Chim the one in danger because he wasn't paying attention through his fear for Harry. Loved Maddie's reaction when she realized Chim had been in danger.

Advance Bravely:

Re-watched all my favorite parts of this BL on Viki as a nice distraction before realizing that the UNCUT episodes can be found HERE. I've DL'ed them and one of these days I plan to see if I can stick them altogether into a single file as although there are 30 episodes they are only ~15-16mins long if you take off the front and end credits. I might even do a special cut just for me to remove all the scenes that don't interest me that focus on the second pairing :) It was great going through the uncut episodes to see all the scenes that were shortened or cut, especially the scene where Xia Yao goes to Yuan Zong's hometown and leaps into his arms when he sees him. It is such a sweet BL romance made all the better for the uncut scenes!

Revenged Love:

I managed to watch ONE episode and it was okay. I'm only up to episode 10 so not even halfway through. I'm not sure why it is not grasping my attention.

Fallout:

Did not watch any episodes this week

The Great Pottery Throw-Down:

Not seen this week's episode yet - or the one last week! I watch this with my older kid and the one time they were in the mood to watch it the internet sucked really badly and it kept buffering every 10 seconds. Weirdly, Netflix wasn't having issues, only Channel 4.

The Pitt:

I started watching season 2 and I am enjoying it so far. It's following the same format of focusing on a single shift set around 10 months after Season 1 on the Fourth of July weekend. The established characters are good and the new ones are intriguing so far. The cases are an interesting cross-section of superficial and life-threatening/fatal.

The Untamed:

I completed my re-watch and enjoyed seeing it again.

CHALLENGE #15: How Did the Fandom Snowflake Challenge Go?

Overall it went well for me.

For me snowflake_challenge has TWO objectives: (1) to see if I can meet each challenge, and (2) to check out the answers given by others. I managed to answer every challenge and I checked many of the links provided by others.

However, I will admit I found some questions a little too similar or related and I felt these could have been rolled up into a single question to make space for other more varied questions:

What I really liked:

05 Create a wishlist - I enjoyed checking the lists to see if there were any wishes I could grant

10 Big Mood (Board) - it was fun to be creative and to check out the picspams/moodboards created by others

14 Promo/Rec List - this gave me a chance to share promos I'd written in 2025 with a wider group of fans, and to check out promos for other fandoms I may or may not have heard of before :)

CHALLENGE #13: Talk About A Community Space You Like

I have only one community space these days and that is DREAMWIDTH as I found it far easier to hold a conversation there than on other places. Within Dreamwidth there are so many communities that I like to check out for different reasons. I'll name just a few here but there are so many other great places:

c_ent: a community for CDrama fans. For someone like me that loves all the martial arts and high fantasy it's a great place to learn about current Chinese shows as well as older ones.
smallfandomfest: a great place to pick up prompts and play in small/rare fandoms. Sadly I have not been well enough to join in on the current round, which ends on Jan 31st.
comment_bingo: it's a fun way to get into the habit of leaving comments - don't have to be long ones! - on other creators' work. I have read and enjoyed stories and art that I might never have checked out otherwise :)
romancingmcshep: a great place for Stargate Atlantis, John/Rodney (McShep) fans
seasons_of_fandom and fandom_empire: both hold regular rounds with challenges for creating works or varying types - fic, art etc

fandomcalendar: I do keep a watch on various exchanges and one of the best places to see everything is here.

I caught up on 3 episodes. Overall they were okay but I have to admit that all the stuff with Hen was getting me down, probably because I am not in the right frame of mind for all the medical drama at the moment due to my own poor health. I'm wondering what they will do about Hen. Is the actor leaving the show, stepping back a little to a less physical role, or are we going to get some miracle cure? As for the incidents: I got second hand embarrassment from the Dom/s chastity belt incident. I start wondering how that guy will ever be able to face anyone in his office after that. Glad Buck approached Athena to tell her the impact she was having on Harry - getting in his head.

CHALLENGE #12: Appreciation Post

Make an appreciation post to those who enhance your fandom life.

There are so many things, people and places I appreciate in Fandom.

Dreamwidth and AO3 are the places I frequent most. I have spent hours reading through communities and friends' posts, and finding amazing stories and art on AO3 as well as meeting fellow fans of whatever media has enraptured me.

Wikipedia and other sites for providing research opportunities for stories, Google for finding images I can use to create graphics.

However it is the people I have met that I appreciate the most. Some have become lifelong friends both on and offline, others are long or short time acquaintances, but I also appreciate those who have been like ships passing in the night, sending greetings and a few kind words or happy thoughts my way while we share a fandom or two and then our paths crossing again sometimes years later.

SNOWFLAKE CHALLENGE 2026

CHALLENGE #9: Talk about your favorite tropes in media or transformative works.

My favorites have not changed since last year so I will copy that here... with a few extras!

1. Enemies/Rivals to Friends (to Lovers): I love when two characters start off as enemies or rivals but they have to work together to overcome some obstacle and in the process they become trusted friends and eventually, even lovers. I love seeing the progression of this change of attitude towards each other as they overcome their first impression and become friends (and so much more). This has been done successfully in a number of movies and TV shows such as The Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity

2. Soulmate AU: I love the idea of two characters discovering that they are soulmates, whether it is by some mark on their skin or some extra-sensory perception (like Sentinel/Guide or some Omegaverse) or even just meeting someone and knowing this is the person they want to spend the rest of their life with, whom they would willingly die for such as Zishu/Kexing in Word of Honor.

3. Fix-It: So many movies and TV shows don't end in the way I want for a particular character but here is where the fanfic writer can come in and FIX IT. I love resurrecting or saving a character who dies in canon, or changing a relationship in a show to one that makes ME happy. Time Loop is almost a sub-category of this, especially when a character has to go through the loop until they get it right and end up with the person they truly love.

4. Canon Divergence: Also known as fork in the road or What If?. I find it fascinating to look at how one change in a TV show or movie can effect the whole outcome. This has been handled so well in some TV shows like Stargate with its canon AUs. I love seeing how things would differ if given two paths/choices the character picks the road that does not end up as canon. It's fascinating to see whether this will still bring two characters together, possibly with a slightly different dynamic.

5. Apocalypse: I love seeing how the characters would react in an apocalyptic situation. Some interesting ones are crossovers and even fusions with apocalyptic movies such as Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, Pacific Rim and World War Z, or TV shows such as The Walking Dead, Falling Skies and so many more. I have written stories with this trope and I have read some superb stories centered on this trope.
